Mildred Lucille McWhorter, 95, Topeka, formerly of Junction City, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Midland Hospice House.
Mildred was born April 23, 1916 in Marion County, the daughter of Arthur and Maud (Kroh) Ebright. Her family moved to Colby when she was 8 years old. She graduated from Colby High School and attended Kansas State College for 2.5 years with a scholarship she won at the Thomas County Free Fair.
Mildred married Dan Phil McWhorter in Sand Springs, OK on July 29, 1939. He died January 6, 1957.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Junction City where she taught Sunday school, served as the church secretary, was a deaconess and worship greeter. She belonged to Pilot Club for many years, holding various offices including President; volunteered with the Geary Community Hospital Auxiliary and was instrumental in their fundraising and operating the gift shop, as well as volunteering at Let's Help.
Survivors include sons, Dan McWhorter and wife, Sunny, Spokane, WA, Robert McWhorter and wife, Nancy, Longmont, CO; daughters, Carolyn Christesen and husband, Alden, Salem, MO, Millie Sears and husband, Pat, Topeka; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Sam Ebright, Ralph Ebright, Helen Weed, and twin sister, Marjorie Ebright, all of Colby.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel in Junction City. Burial will follow at Ft. Riley Cemetery. Mildred will lie in state at the funeral home after 1:00 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
