Michael Oppenlander, 70, of Junction City, KS, passed away September 12, 2020. Johnson Funeral Home of Junction City is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
He will be placed at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, KS, at a later date.
Michael was born on October 19, 1949, in Junction City, Kansas, to Ernest and Joyce (Cogdil) Oppenlander. He grew up in the Junction City area and after high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and honorably served for over 7 years. He traveled to many duty stations domestic and abroad, but ultimately came back home to Junction City, Kansas. Michael earned many awards and achievements to include but are not limited to: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one OLC, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Mast, RVN M.U.C Gallantry Cross Medal, Rifle Sharpshooter, and Good Conduct Medal.
Michael was a private but caring uncle, beloved brother, and loyal friend.
Michael is survived by his loving family: two nieces Christy Lee (Dave Hill) Smelly of Junction City, KS and Kim Christina Tarr; three great-nephews Bruce Shannon Broome Jr., Shannon Michael Smelly Jr., and Brandon Tarr; one great-niece Nikki Tarr; four great-great-nieces Breanna Broome, Madison Broome, Kayden Wilson, and Bellarose Broome; one great-great nephew Owen Broome; and a host of loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers Ernest August Jr., Leland LeRoy, Gary Lee, and Robert Eugene Oppenlander, and his sister Judith Anne Oppenlander, and one great-nephew Bradley Broome.
