Michael C. Kopmeyer, 52, of Topeka, passed away January 11, 2005 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita as the result of a car accident. Visitation will be Friday, January 14, 2005, 6-7:30 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Funeral service will be Saturday, January 15, 2005, 11 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel with Bishop George Fitzsimons officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Kopmeyer was born June 2, 1952, in Junction City, son of William C. and Mary I. (Cleveland) Kopmeyer. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1974 with a BS in Secondary Education (Journalism and English). Mr. Kopmeyer went on to receive a MS in Curriculum and Instruction in July 1975 and a MS in Guidance Counseling in May 1983 from Kansas State University. He also held a Kansas Teaching Certificate.
Mr. Kopmeyer was an English instructor and basketball coach for many years. He taught at Junction City Junior High School from 1975-1977 and was the 9th grade boys basketball coach; taught at Wamego High School from 1977-1979 and was the varsity boys basketball coach; taught at Junction City High School from 1979-1981 and was the junior varsity basketball coach; taught at Neosho County Community College from 1983-1986 and was the men's varsity basketball coach; Kansas Wesleyan University junior varsity basketball coach from 1986-1987; Academic and Vocational Counselor at Lawrence Gardner High School and at the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility from 1988-2003; and was currently an Adjunct Instructor at Highland Community College located on the TJCF campus.
Survivors include his cousins, Margaret Ann Gray and son Robby of Belmont, MA, and Jerry and Janice Ratts of Wichita; and two nieces, Megan and Mary Ann Russo and their father, Joe of Richmond, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lynn Russo.
Pallbearers will be John Heublein, Jerry Jones, Bob King, Rick Stephens, Kevin Cherveny and Cliff Wright.
