Funeral Services for Merle M. Ascher, 76, Junction City, will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Marrs officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Mr. Ascher passed away at his home in eastern Geary County September 6, 2006. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington. Memorial Contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 S. Eisenhower, Junction City, KS 66441 and or American Cancer Society, Heartland Division, 1100 Pennsylvania, Ave., Kansas City, MO, 64105 and or American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 1653, Topeka, KS, 66601-9865.

Merle was born July 17, 1930, the son of Louis Carl and Emile Regina (Erichsen) Ascher. He graduated from Junction City High School in 1948. He started his career in farming and ranching after graduating from high school and continued to be actively engaged in farming until the present. He was married to Betty Nelson on June 8, 1958.

Merle was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Junction City serving on various boards and committees. He also served on the board of directors for the Local Farmers Co-op, FHA, ASC and numerous other boards.

Merle was very gifted with his hands in the area of woodworking and metals. These were his hobbies, as he was constantly engineering and building something, either for his home, farm or neighbors. However, his greatest passion was his farm and cattle. He took great pride in being a good stockman and steward of the land.

Merle is survived at the residence by his wife Betty of 48 years. Two sons and their wives, Keith and Anita Ascher of Junction City and Kevin and Jeanette Ascher of Milford, one granddaughter and two step-granddaughters, one sister, Maxine Junghans of Junction City.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers Raymond, Virgil, Everett and Morley.

Pallbearers are Earl Stackhouse, Gary Junghans, Brad Becker, Craig Paxton, Danny Donnert, and Royce Nelson.

Honorary Pallbearers are Larry Havenstein, Scott Miller, David Nelson, Randy Lee, Jerry Smith, Pat Boller, Bill Strauss, and Glenn Zeigler.
