Funeral Services for Maxine Ruby Zurmely, 83, will be Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St.Xavier's Catholic Church in Junction City, KS. The Visitation will be Tuesday, April 9, 2002 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at Johnson Funeral Chapel.Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Xavier Catholic Church, 218 N. Washington, Junction City, KS and/or Wakefield Museum, 604 6th Street, Wakefield, KS 67487. Maxine died April 7, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center. She was born July 10, 1918 at Wakefield, KS, the daughter of Fred C. and Rose (Budden) Myers. Following graduation from Wakefield Rural High School in 1936, she was employed at the Clay County Hospital and resided in the nurses home. She loyally embraced the study of Catholicism and married Donald H. Zurmely in the Clay Center Catholic Church, June 18, 1939. Their only child, Michael "Mickey" Frederick Zurmely was born June 18, 1943 at the Junction City Hospital. During WWII, while Don was in the service, Maxine visited him at Camp Crowder, MO. And also lived near Camp Polk, LA. While he was stationed in Germany she worked at the Junction City Post Office.When he returned to civilian life they moved to a farm south of Wakefield, Maxine was employed as a clerk at the local post office. After Mickey's graduation from Wakefield High School, they moved from the farm to Junction City. Don was employed with Shellhaus Bakery and Maxine was a receptionist for Dr. C.V. Minnick. They had bought a home in Junction City where she lived until her death. Maxine was a devoted homemaker. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening, house plants, needlework and crossword puzzles.In all of her jobs she was appreciated by her co-workers. She kept up on
correspondences with many of them for several decades. She was a good listener and confidant to her siblings and many of their children. She however, had not shared her own personal health problems as to not worry anyone. She leaves countless number of dear relatives and friends who have special memories. She enjoyed her 70th birthday with an open house hosted by Annetta Hayes in Wakefield July 1988 and her 80th, July 1998 hosted by Mickey and Trudy Zurmely. She was a former member of Wakefield V.F.W. Auxiliary, She was a member of the Geary CountyHistorical Society, Wakefield Museum, and the St. Xavier Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her Husband: Donald, Parents: Fred and Rose, infant brother and sister,Two Brothers: Ray and Merle Myers.She is survived by her Son: Michael "Mickey" Zurmely and wife Trudy (Oard) Zurmely of Junction City, KS; Three Grandchildren: Michele Hudson, Lisa Clarke, Curt Zurmely and Four Great-Grandchildren; Three Sisters: Annetta Hayes of Wakefield, KS., Rosalie Wheeler of Florida/Washington D.C., Mariwilla Lumb of Abilene, KS; and One Brother: Rex Myers of Kansas City, MO, a 99 year old Aunt (Ethel Babot), and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.The Pallbearers are Ken Myers, Ted Hayes, Jr., Ed Wheeler, Jr., Greg Lumb, Mike Myers, and Larry Myers. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Junction City, KS. Honorary Pallbearers are Mark Myers, Brad Lumb and Christopher Wheeler, Organist will be Anita Hernandez.
