Mary Joan Short, 91, of Junction City, Kansas died on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Valley View Senior Life Center in Junction City, Kansas.
Mary Joan was born July 28, 1932 in Halstead, Kansas the daughter of Albert and Mildred (Pierce) Hahn.
She attended school in Lyons, Kansas and graduated from Lyons High School. She later went to cosmetology school. Mary Joan also worked at the Sedgwick County Courthouse and the Mid Continent Airport in Wichita. She moved to Junction City in the early 1990's when her husband Wilbur became the code inspector for the City of Junction City. They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Junction City for many years. She was strong in her faith.
Mary Joan was a member of the Women's National Rifle Association. One of her many talents was painting. She painted landscapes with oil paints which are now displayed and treasured by family and friends. She prided herself with her personal appearance. Her hair, nails and lipstick were a priority to the start of her day.
While residing at Valley View, the staff loved her wit, sass, sweetness and her social personality. She was passionate about her love for jewelry, shopping, Pepsi, chocolate and coffee.
In 1950, she married Wilbur Short in Lyons, Kansas. Wilbur served in the United States Air Force. Mary Joan and Wilbur were fond of their memories made at their duty stations to include California, Alaska and Portugal. Wilbur died in 2012.
She is survived by her son, Thomas L. Short of Goddard, Kansas; one granddaughter, Barbara D. Highsmith of Jacksonville, Florida; one grandson, Steven Watkins of Hillsboro, Kansas; two great-grandsons, Ryan Mottas of Jacksonville, Florida and Brent Watkins of Manhattan, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wilbur, two daughters, Bonita and Linda and two grandchildren, Jeff and Melissa and one sister, Nancy.
A visitation will be held 2-3 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2023 at the Johnson Funeral Home.
A funeral service will follow the visitation at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home.
A private burial will take place at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to be given to organization of the donor's choice.
