Mary Kay Amidei

November 18, 1942 — July 12, 2012

Mary Kay Amidei, 69, died peacefully after an extended illness on July 12, 2012 at the Glenbrook Hospice facility in Carlsbad, California. Born to Mary Jean Grentner Makins and Capt. Alfred E. Makins on November 18, 1942 in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, Mary Kay lost her father who was killed in action in France in 1944. In 1947 her mother married Dr. Charles V. Minnick in Junction City, Kansas and together they raised four children. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Charles Robert Minnick who died in 2008.

She is survived by her loving husband, Joseph Amidei of 43 years; her devoted children Amy and John Joseph "J.J." of San Diego, CA., her sister, Joanne Babich of Raytown, MO.; her brother, John D. Minnick of Topeka, KS: and her sister-in-law, Sharyn Minnick of Overland Park, KS. She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.

Mary Kay graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in Junction City, Kansas in 1960. She obtained a bachelor's degree in education from Kansas State University in 1964 and a master's degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1974. She was a elementary school teacher for many years in the Shawnee Mission, KS. schools.

When she and her family moved to California in 1985 she embraced the world of real estate. Together with her husband Joe they built a successful business with ERA Eagle Realty in the San Diego area. They were quite the power couple and were ranked the #2 team in the United States for ERA with annual sales over 10 million dollars.

Mary Kay's closest friends in California were members of her bible study group. She later developed a passion for writing and was a member of the San Diego Christian Writer's Guild. She became a poet and a published Christian author.

Visitation hours will be 7 PM-9 PM at the Johnson Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street on Friday, August 3, 2012 in Junction City, KS. Mary Kay was cremated. A memorial mass will follow on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Junction City at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Father Al Brungardt officiating. Burial will be private at St Mary's Cemetery in Junction City. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Francis Xavier High School, 218 N. Washington Street, Junction City, KS 66441.
