Maj S. Coffey

December 23, 1964 — January 19, 2021

Chaplain (Major) Kent S. Coffey was born in West Palm Beach, Florida December 23, 1964 to Amos and Evelyn Coffey. He passed away on January 19, 2021 in Junction City, Kansas at the age of 56.

He is survived by his wife, Kristine and their three children (Gregory, Jayden, and Savannah), his two adult children (Melynda Wright (Omar) and AJ Coffey), two grandchildren (Cayla and Ethan Wright), and eight siblings (Judy Antrim, Patricia Morris (Scott), Becky Hallman, Vicki Hamblin (Jerome), Diana Scott (Greg), Terri Cluff (Rick), Harold Hamblin (Jodie), and Brent Coffey). He is preceded in death by his father, Amos (2020), his mother, Evelyn (1966), his stepmother, Louise (2000), and his granddaughter, Alexys (2012).

Kent enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1987 as a Mortarman (11C) and served in Panama during Operation Just Cause. After his initial term, he separated from the Army and held various jobs before answering God's calling into the ministry and ultimately earning his Masters in Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO. He served several years as a pastor and church planter in the Midwest prior to commissioning into the U.S. Army as a Chaplain in 2005. He deployed to Baghdad, Iraq twice in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Kent's most recent assignment was as Fort Riley's Family Life Chaplain where he assisted Families and Soldiers seeking counsel, led the ChapelNeXt Service for over two years, and started Side-by-Side as a foster/adoptive support group. His dream was to retire from the Army in March 2022 and start a small family farm on their property in Missouri.

Kent's gregarious spirit and love for God were evident in everything he did. He is greatly loved and will be missed by many.

The family will hold a memorial service of celebration at his home church of Coon Creek Baptist Church in Collins, Missouri on February 20, 2021.
