Magdalena Velez, 99, died on August 7, 2012 at the Aldersgate Village in Topeka, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington St. in Junction City. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13, 2012 at the St. Mary's Chapel, 3 Barry Avenue, Fort Riley, KS with Fr. Al Brungardt officiating. Burial will take place at Fort Riley Cemetery following the service. Memorial contributions have been designated to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 4125 SW Gage Center Dr., Suite LL-15, Topeka, KS 66601.
Magdalena was born on January 12, 1913 to Horacio and Angela Pagan in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. She spent most of her early childhood in Puerto Rico and attended local schools. "Magda" was considered the matriarch of the ever-growing Velez family. She's remembered for her gentleness and homemaking skills including sewing dresses without the aid of patterns. She served as host to many memorable Christmas Eve celebrations, and family and friends already miss her Puerto Rican dishes such as pasteles and rice and beans.
She married Angel M. Velez on October 18, 1947 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1999.
Magdalena was a resident of Junction City, Kansas since 1966 and lived here continuously until recently moving to Topeka in order to be closer to her family.
She is survived by five sons, Angel Velez Jr. of Junction City, Irving and wife Kathy Velez of Goose Creek, SC, Melvin Velez of Las Vegas, NV, Milton and wife Colleen Velez and Jaime "Andy" and wife Robin Rusco-Velez both of Topeka, KS, and by one daughter, Marisol and husband Michael Pulliam of Los Alamos, NM. She is also survived by a brother, Jose Banos of New York, NY, by one sister, Ana Elisa Banos of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and by several grandchildren: Chris, Tina, Kara, Bryan, Jennifer, Alexandra, Ashley, Andrea, Morgan, Jari, Josiah, Elena, Tessa, Jennifer, Evan, and Mikayla as well as twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Angel M. Velez, by her parents, Horacio and Angela Pagan, by three brothers, Horacio Banos Pagan, Emilio Banos, and Gavino B. Pagan, and by three sisters, Juana Banos Pagan, Angela Banos Pagan, and Asuncion Banos Pagan.
