Funeral Mass for Lt. Col. (RET) Raymond C. Meis, Sr., 86, of Junction City, KS will be held at 11 a.m.Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at St. Xavier's Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors at Fort Riley Post Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday September 28, 2005 at St. Xavier's Catholic Church with the parish rosary to be recited at 9:45 a.m. Mr. Meis passed away September 22, 2005 at Valley View professional Care Center. Mr. Meis was born September 15, 1919, Catharine, KS to John Carl and Amelia (Dorzweiler) Meis. He was the seventh child and third son of thirteen children. The family moved to a farm in Weskan, KS when he was seven and only spoke German. He graduated from Weskan High School in 1938. He joined the Colorado Army National Guard and the active Army in August 1942. As a Sgt., he married Celestine (Celeste) D. Newland at Lawton, OK on February 15, 1941, she preceded him in death June 26, 2005.
He graduated from Officers Candidate School and as a 2nd Lt. served with the 3rd Armored Division in Europe in WWII, in England, Germany, Belgium. Northern France, Normandy, Ardennes and Central Europe participating in the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day. He received the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct medal, WWII Victory, Army Commendation, among others.
After WWII, the family lived in Sharon Springs, Logan, Hays and Hutchinson, KS and moved to Ft. Carson, CO upon the onset of the Korean War. His family joined him at Camp Wood and Itazuke AFB, Kyushu, Japan in 1952. In 1954, they moved to Colorado Springs and then in 1956, moved to Nurnberg and Mainz Germany with the 8th Infantry, returning to Ft Riley, KS in December 1958, becoming part of the Big Red One. He and his family moved to Junction City before his tour of Vietnam duty, he retired in 1971 as a LTC.
He was a member of the St. Xavier Catholic Church, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Retired Officers Association, Disabled American Veterans, 3rd Armored Assoc., American Legion.
He is survived by one daughter, Connie -Meis-Willett of Newton, one son, Raymond C. Meis, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Overland Park, KS, four granddaughters, Kimberlee and Steve Burghart, Halstead, KS, Gina and Dave Coffman, Topeka, KS, Heather and David King, Derby, KS, Michele and Scott Banks, Wichita, KS. Twenty great-grandchildren. One brother, Elmer of Las Vegas, NV, five sister-in-laws, many nephews and nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by, one grandson, Phil Willett (1984), one great-granddaughter, Marissa Burghart (2003), his parents and 11 siblings.
