Lois Joan McCandless passed away July 14, 2012 at Valley View Senior Life Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, July 18th at 10:30 am, at Faith Lutheran Church, 212 N. Eisenhower St. in Junction City. The family will receive guests Tuesday, July 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm also at Faith Lutheran Church.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Northeast Kansas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 4125 SW Gage Center Drive, Suite LL-15, Topeka, KS 66601 or to the Faith Lutheran Church, 212 N. Eisenhower St., Junction City, KS 66441.
Lois was born June 20, 1933 in Patterson, Ohio to James and Verna Mae (Smith) Hamilton in their family home. She was the youngest of 7 children. She graduated from Forest (Ohio) High School in 1951 and was her class valedictorian. She graduated from the Toledo School of Nursing in 1954 and began her nursing career that same year.
Lois married Robert Dale McCandless Jr. September 2, 1956 at the United Methodist Church in Patterson, Ohio. They started a family shortly after and lived in various cities in Ohio before moving to Junction City in June of 1974. She was employed at Geary Community Hospital from 1974 until she retired in 1995 as the Director of Nursing. Lois loved nursing and found joy in helping others.
Her faith was un-wavering her entire life. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, sang in the choir, and participated in the ELCA women's group. Lois enjoyed many things in life. She loved music and could often be found playing the piano and singing. She loved her pets, her friends, and most of all her family. She always had a smile on her face, loved laughing, and sharing her sense of humor with others. She will forever be loved and will always be missed.
She is survived by her husband Dale of Junction City, her four children: Tim McCandless and his wife Jo of Overland Park, KS, Peggy Tippin and her husband Wally of Waukee, IA, Nancy McCandless of Junction City, KS and Tammy McCandless Gehrs, of Lenexa, KS. In addition she is survived by her five grandchildren who brightened her life: Andrew Tippin, Brian McCandless, Krista Tippin, Bret McCandless and Kaytlin Tippin. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Brooks and husband Bob of Columbus, OH, sister Mary Waller of Kenton, OH, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents, infant son Robert James McCandless, a brother James Hamilton, and three sisters, Mabel Jean Hamilton, Helen Price and Grace VanTilberg.
