Funeral services for Lois Jean Evans Riggs, 90, of Junction City will be 11 a.m., Wednesday June 10, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington with Pastor Ronnie Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Mrs. Riggs passed away at Geary Community Hospital on June 4, 2009. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the First Christian Church, 1429 St. Mary's Rd. Junction City, KS 66441.
She was born October 5, 1918 in Wilsey, KS to Orin W. and Cora A. (Cox) Smirl. She attended Wilsey Grade School and graduated from Wilsey High School in 1936.
Jean was employed at the J.C. Penney Company in Junction City from 1953 until her retirement in 1981. She was a sales lady and fashion buyer for the ladies ready to wear department. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Junction City and was active in the Tuesday morning Women's Prayer and Bible Study and the Circle 3 Missions Group. She was also active in the Town and County EEU; Business and Professional Women's Club; Eagles Auxiliary 830; American Legion Unit 0045; Geary County Historical Society; Gold Star Wives of America; Knife and Fork Club; American Society of Retired Persons; Election board worker for many years.
Jean was a devoted mother, loyal friend and cherished her time spent with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She married Leo Max Evans in 1937. They had one son, A. Max Evans. Leo was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge on April 13, 1945. She married T.E. Riggs September 21, 1946. They had one son, Jerry T. Riggs. T.E. preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Jerry T. Riggs, his wife Candi, and son Andrew of Manhattan, KS, Daughter-in-law Jeanette Evans Willet of Topeka, KS, Grandson Randy Evans, wife Michelle and great-granddaughter Allison of Topeka, KS. Grandson Rick Evans, wife Tracie and great-granddaughter Camryn and great-grandson Caden Max of Olathe, KS, two nephews and one niece.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son, A. Max Evans, brothers, Jessie, Kenneth and Walter Smirl and sisters, Theresa Wild and Thelma Clark.
