Linwood Cromartie, 58, of Junction City, died on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Geary Community Hospital in Junction City. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington St. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, KS with full military honors. Memorial contributions have been designated to the Disabled American Veterans, VA Hospital-Bldg #24 RM 106G, 2200 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66622.
Linwood was born on October 24, 1953 in Lumberton, North Carolina. He attended local schools and joined the United States Army upon his graduation from high school.
He was married to Doreen Joyce Shelton on February 25, 1981 in Wahiawa, Hawaii. They were married for over 31 years and she survives of the home in Junction City.
He retired from the military in 1993 after serving his country proudly for over 22 years. Upon retirement, Linwood decided to make his home in Junction City where he had lived since 1987. He worked for the Civil Service at Fort Riley as a project manager for almost 15 years. He was very devoted to his job, to his family, and to everyone that knew him.
Linwood leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Doreen Cromartie of Junction City; one son, Linwood and wife Melissa Cowan of Goochland, VA; and two stepsons, Mitchell Shelton and Narobie Shelton of Kingsville, TX. He is also survived by two granddaughters, LaMya and MaLeah Cowan of Goochland, VA; one brother, Charles Cromartie of Lumberton, NC; and one sister, Essie (Cromartie) Richardson of Lumberton, NC. He will also be greatly missed by his little friend, Coco.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
