Lillian E. Newman-McDonald, 96, of Junction City, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman, KS. Visitation will be at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel on Washington Street in Junction City, KS, from 6 to 8 PM, Monday, April 15, 2013. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10 AM in the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Milford Cemetery.
Lillian was born in LaPorte, Indiana, on February 18, 1917, to George and Caroline Koch Karmann. The family then moved to the Milford/Junction City area. After graduating from Junction City High School in 1935, she married Charles C. Newman on January 31, 1936.
Lillian was very active in the First Baptist Church for many years and had a deep faith in God. She worked for 21 years in the Office of the District Court, starting out as a clerk, moving up to Deputy Clerk, and then serving as Clerk of the District Court until her retirement on March 1, 1982. She was also active in Pilot Club. She enjoyed all types of handwork, especially knitting and sewing for her grandchildren.
For the past 13 years, she has been a resident of Chapman Valley Manor, where she struggled with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
She is preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Clayton C. Bates; husbands, Charles C. Newman and Orville T. McDonald; grandson, Donald Newman; son-in-law, Edward J. Irwin; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Newman; great-granddaughter, Melissa Shruhan; son-in-law, Daniel P. Simon, and son, Ronald Newman.
Survivors include her son, Darrell Newman and wife, Sue, Richland, Washington; daughter, Carolyn Newman Irwin Simon, Blue Springs, Missouri; and daughter-in-law, Heidi Newman, Orlando, Florida.
She is also survived by grandchildren, Vicki Shruhan, Charles Newman, David Newman, Annisa Wright, and Andrew Irwin; 10 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
