Graveside services for CSM (Ret) Leonard W. Julian, 79, of Junction City, KS will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 22, 2010 at Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors. No visitation is planned. Mr. Julian passed away at Geary Community Hospital on January 16, 2010. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Red Cross, 1221 SW 17th, Topeka, KS 66604.
Leonard W. Julian was born June 22, 1930, Ness City, KS, son of Chet and Ella Mae (Burns) Julian. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on December 7, 1948 and had an illustrious career for thirty years. His overseas tours included two combat tours in Korea, two combat tours in Vietnam, Germany, Japan and Formosa. He received numerous awards and decorations, among them the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (6 awards) Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3 awards), Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Citation, Air Medal, Combat Medical Badge (2 awards), Good Conduct Medal (9 awards), Korean Presidential Citation, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Air Assault Badge, plus an assortment of other service medals and awards.
He retired from the U. S. Army with the rank of Command Sergeant Major in January 1979. Following his retirement he worked at the Education Center at Fort Riley. During his time in the military he married Lore L. Lerner March 16, 1961 Niederwerrn, Germany she preceded him in death February 17, 2003.
He is survived by one son, Henry M. Julian and wife Debra of Milford, KS, one sister, Lorna Wilcox of Casper, WY, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Larry Julian.
