Lela "Lee" Russ
Lela "Lee" Russ, 91, of St. Francis, formerly of Junction City, died June 12, 2015 at the Kearney Regional Medical Center, Kearney, Nebraska. Lee was born August 4, 1923 in Clyde, Kansas, the daughter of Snine Albert and Adelia Marie (Deneault) Racette, and was the youngest of four children. Her mother and the children moved to Concordia in the late 1920s, after Lee's father abandoned the family. Lee attended grade school at Our Lady of Perpetual Hope and high school at Concordia, and graduated from Concordia High School in 1941.
After graduating from high school, Lee and her older sister moved to Junction City to work at Ft. Riley, where she was employed for several years with the post transportation office.
Lee married Cpt. John D. Russ on April 16, 1943 at Ft. Riley. In 1952, the family moved to a home in Junction City, where she continued to live until she moved to St. Francis, KS in 2011. Lee was a member of the Church of the Covenant (Episcopal) in Junction City from 1960 until she moved to St. Francis in 2011. After moving to St. Francis, she attended Peace Lutheran Church. Lee was an avid bridge player most of her life. She also was skilled in china painting and did so for a number of years. Lee remained active in life up until the day before her death.
Lee Russ is survived by two sons, J. Stephen Russ (Eileen), North Conway, New Hampshire, and Alan L. Russ (Joyce), St. Francis, KS; a sister, Blanche Christian, El Paso, Texas; and a brother, Armand F. Racette, Concordia, KS. She is also remembered by her late husband's children, Patricia Collier, Salem, Oregon, and Robert (Gwen) Russ, Greensboro, South Carolina. Lee was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John D. Russ on Dec. 19, 1995; and a son, Michael B. Russ; and a sister, Angeline Richard.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2015 at Church of the Covenant (Episcopal), Junction City. Burial will be at Ft. Riley Post Cemetery. The family will greet friends, Thursday, June 18, 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. A memorial gathering will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church, St. Francis, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either the Church of the Covenant, Junction City, or Peace Lutheran Church, St. Francis, KS; or the St. Francis Senior Center, St. Francis, KS.
