Funeral services for Lee Vaughn Hornbaker, 88, of Junction City, will be Friday, December 24, 2004, 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Paul Wolf officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, December 23, 2004, 6-8 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery. Mr. Hornbaker passed away December 22, 2004 at the Geary Community Hospital. Memorial contributions may be given to the First United Methodist Church.
Lee was born in Castleton, KS on July 31, 1916, to Charles C. and Mary (Logan) Hornbaker. He spent his childhood in Castleton. After graduating high school in Castleton, he attended Hutchison Junior College in Hutchison, KS. He went on to attend and graduate from Washburn University in Topeka, KS receiving his L.L.B. After Law School he worked for a period for the United States government. He met Alma Wacha in Milwaukee, WI and they were married in Kansas City December 31, 1942. They lived in Hutchison for several years where he practiced law. In 1946 they moved to Junction City where Lee practiced law with Howard Harper for over 40 years. He was elected Geary County Attorney in 1948 and served one term.
A lifetime Democrat, he was the chairman of the Geary County Democratic party for many years. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968 and Chairman of the second district democrats in the mid 1970's.
Lee Hornbaker was a trial lawyer practicing both criminal and civil litigation. In 1966 he was elected president of the Kansas Trial Lawyers. He was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a life long member of the Kansas Bar Association. He was appointed by the Kansas Supreme Court to the Kansas Board of Law Examiners. He also was instrumental in writing both the Kansas Workers Compensation law and codifying the Kansas Criminal Code.
Lee and Alma have two children, David Hornbaker, Topeka, KS and Steven Hornbaker, Junction City, KS. He has three grandchildren, Veronica Wooten, Lawrence, KS, Matthew Hornbaker, Lawrence, KS and Andy Hornbaker, Junction City, KS. Also, he has three great-grandchildren, Ethan Schnieders, Kennedy Schnieders and Grace Wooten.
He was preceded in death by Alma on October 28, 1989. In 1992 he married Katherine Harper, Phoenix, AZ. She survives him.
Lee Hornbaker was an avid traveler, journeying to nearly every continent and hundreds of countries. He and Alma traveled the world and that continued with Katherine after their marriage. He loved classical music, poetry and the arts. He loved being a lawyer and prided himself in his strong work ethic and dedication to the profession.
Lee and Alma made it a point to include their children and grandchildren in their travels and both Veronica and Matthew were able to travel extensively by their grandparents side. Lee always made time for his family and while being very generous with his donations to charitable causes, gave freely of the most valuable gift - his time.

Pallbearers will be Craig Altenhofen, Charles W. Harper, Steven Opat, Dan McCulley, Michael P. McKone and David Platt.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Leo Rogers, Bill Crites, Bill Stahl and Dan Craig.
