Funeral services for Learie George Thompson, 51, will be Friday, December 9, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel with Pastor Wilbur Burton and Pastor Don Yancheson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Fort Riley Cemetery. Mr. Thompson passed away December 1, 2005 at Geary Community Hospital. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Windsong Adult Care Home, 2307 Mockingbird Rd., Milford, KS 66514
Learie was born April 23, 1954 in Port of Spain Trinidad, to Fitz Albert and Thelma (James) Thompson. He was the last of seven children. Learie attended St. Margaret Secondary School in Port of Spain before immigrating to the United States in 1975.
Learie entered military service Sept. 11, 1979. While on active duty he served with the 2nd Armored Division and the First Military Division both in Germany, Fort Hood, TX, and Fort Riley. He married his wife Jessie O. Edwards of Houston, TX in 1984. In 1991 Learie served with his unit HHC 134 in Operation Desert Storm. In May of 1992 he transferred to the United State Army Reserve serving in various units until his retirement in November of 2005. At the time of his retirement he served as a Sergeant First Class in Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment of the 450th Transportation Bn., Manhattan, KS. He worked a dual status position with ECS #33 of the 89th RRC. Learie also held a CNA license from the State Of Kansas and Worked at Windsong Adult Care Home in Milford, KS.
Learie is survived by his wife, Jessie O. Thompson, Milford, KS; his parents, Fitz and Thelma Thompson; three brothers; Anthony Thompson of Trinidad, Donald Thompson of Connecticut, and Mervin Thompson of Bronx, NY. Two sisters Marva Thompson of Houston, TX and Merlyn Bates of Trinidad ; a cousin Nova Donbar, Houston, TX, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother Alvin Thompson.
Pallbearers will be MSG Robert Yeagley, SFC Terry Fleming, SFC Randy Holding, SFC Jim Culp, SFC Ed Field, SFC Don Weathersby and SGT Cy Nightingale.
