Dr. Larry Lee Slaten, 73, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away December 13, 2012 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, KS. Funeral services will be 10a.m., Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, December 21, 2012, 5p.m. to 7p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions have been designated to the First Presbyterian Church, 113 W. 5th Street, Junction City, KS 66441.
Larry was born June 1, 1939 east and south of Durango, CO in what is called the Florida Mesa area to Elmer J. and Pearl (Shell) Slaten. He was the third youngest of four brothers and three sisters. As a child he attended a two room country school through eighth grade. Larry graduated from Durango High School in 1957, attended the University of Denver and graduated from the University of Missouri (at Kansas City) Dental School where he earned his D.D.S. degree in 1964. He worked all sorts of menial jobs to pay his way through school. Larry came to Junction City and opened his dental practice in 1964. He has practiced here in the same location for 48 years. He had a strong commitment to providing care for his dental patients and enjoyed his work. In 1965 Larry married Nancy Hood. They raised three children.
Larry joined the Presbyterian Church with his family when he was 10 years old. He has served many years as Elder and Deacon in the Junction City Presbyterian Church. Larry has been a member of the local, state and National Dental Organizations and Rotary Clubs since 1965. He served as Secretary of the Dental Society from 1977 to 1980. Larry was a member of the Junction City Junior Baseball Association for several years. He was both a coach and member of the Board of Directors. He was one of seven founding members who established the Geary County Historical Society in the early 70's and served as its president. He served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank from 1989 to present. He enjoyed cooking, hunting, and building train sets. Over the years he collected guns, knives and coins. He was a huge John Wayne fan.
Larry is survived by his wife Nancy of the home, his three children, Joan N. Robinson and husband Jim of Bonner Springs, KS, Lee J. Mullen and husband Mark of Parker, CO and Lane W. Slaten of Olathe, KS, four grandsons, 1LT Ryan Robinson, Kyle Robinson, Brock Mullen and Landon Lee Slaten. He is also survived by three brothers, Kenny Slaten, Sam Slaten and Glen Slaten and two sisters, Betty Jo Kafer and Judy LePlatt. He was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Jean Graham and two brothers, Jim Slaten and Donald Lee Slaten.
