A Mass of Christian Burial for Katharina A. Lavender, 83, of Junction City will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, November 1, 2010 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt officiating. Inurnment will follow at Fort Riley Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street, Sunday, October 31, 2010, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.
Mrs. Lavender passed away October 23, 2010 at Valley View Senior Life Center. Memorial contributions have been designated to the American Diabetes Association, 10580 Barkley, Ste. 400, Overland Park, KS 66212 and St. Xavier Catholic Church, P.O. Box 399, Junction City, KS 66441.
Mrs. Lavender (Kathatrina Anna Maria Rech) was born June 22, 1927, Darmstadt, Germany to Alfons and Paula (Spix) Rech. She graduated from high school in Berlin. On May 21, 1952 she married CSM John H. Lavender in Munich, Germany and moved to Fort Riley, KS that same year. Her husband preceded her in death on April 30, 2003.
She was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church, worked at the Rectory and for many years at the school cafeteria. She also worked as a sales clerk for Junghans Liquor store for more than ten years, until retirement on March 1, 1991.
She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and served two years as the Commander of the Junction City Chapter, Pearl Harbor Unit #16. She was also a member of the Church Council, Gray Ladies at Fort Riley and had served as President of the NCO Wives Club. She enjoyed reading, classical music, opera and all types of needle work.
She is survived by two sons; John E. Lavender and his wife Brenda of Stockbridge, GA and Clayton M. Lavender and his wife Kang of Killeen, TX; one step-daughter, Myra (Sweet) Lavender Small of Monroe, MI; two daughters-in-law, Mary (Beckman) Lavender and Lucinda (Davidson) Lavender; six grandchildren: John W., Alysia, Michael Kim, Gina, Brandon, and Courtney; and one great grandson, Michael Jarmeel.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons; Cleveland Lavender and Michael S. Lavender.
