Karl Edward Eaton

September 28, 1941 — December 7, 2022

Karl Edward Eaton, 81, formerly of Lewisburg, West Virginia, passed away on December 7, 2022, in Junction City, Kansas after a short battle with cancer. Karl lived the final two and a quarter years of his life in Manhattan, Kansas near one of his daughters.

Karl was a “thinking man.” He was the first person in his family to graduate from college. He studied English Literature at Bridgewater College, where he met his wife, Emma Kathleen Rider. His studies were interrupted by the Vietnam War, when he was called upon to serve our country in the U.S. Army. He returned from service in 1968 to finish his degree. He and Kathy fell in love with the Greenbrier Valley in West Virginia, where he resided for most of his life. He pursued several careers and hobbies in his lifetime, including lay minister for the Church of the Brethren, elementary school teacher, real estate agent, author, maintenance staff at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and semi-retired as a gas station attendant. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ronceverte, West Virginia and participated in the church choir and Men’s Fellowship for many years. Although he was not a wealthy man, he was generous with the money that he had. He donated his body to scientific research so that some good could come from his death. Karl is best known for his corny sense of humor, and he took great joy in making people laugh.

Karl was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 28, 1941, to Clarence Leigh Eaton and Helen Grace Gatewood Eaton. He is survived by two daughters, Hilary Esry and Amanda Mayfield; four grandchildren, Dustin Mayfield, Lauren Mayfield Baker, Rider Mayfield, and Ryan Mayfield; his sister, Sara June Gill; two nieces, Deborah Howard and Karen Zamenski; one nephew, John Gill; and his cousin, Bonnie Gill. Karl was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brother, Vernon Eaton.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
