J.W. Thompson "Poopa",86, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, KS. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Second Missionary Baptist Church. A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 5, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue in Junction City. Burial will follow the funeral service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with military honors. Memorial donations are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
J.W. Thompson was born August 4, 1928, in Tennessee the son of Lee and Marie (Johnson) Thompson.
J.W. served in the United States Army. He later worked for Civil Service at Fort Riley. After his retirement with Civil Service, he went to work for U.S.D. #475 as an electronics technician. He received various employment and achievement awards throughout his lifetime. J.W. was a member of the AFGE Local #2324, VFW Post #8773, the local Chapter NAACP and the local Fish & Game Organization.
On August 4, 1972, he married Marion Piatek in Junction City. She survives of the home.
Survivors include four sons, J.W. Thompson, Jr, of Milford, KS, Bobby Thompson of TX, Paul Thompson of Las Vegas, NV and Ronnie Jones of Junction City, KS. He is also survived by five daughters, Susie Gibbs of Junction City, KS, Kathy Marrow Jones of Colorado Springs, CO, Sonya Legette of Topeka, KS, Deborah Jackson of Junction City, KS and Berma Johnson of Junction City, KS. He is survived by his brothers and sisters; Betty Elam of Junction City, KS, Ruby Washington of Lima, OH and Junior Thompson of Russellville, KY, he is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Maggie Jones and two brothers; Robert Thompson and Joseph Sullivan.
