After a courageous battle with a lengthy illness Joung Sun "Jean" Leggs, 82, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2010, after being able to say good-bye to her family. Jean, a resident of Junction City since 1970, was born and raised in Seoul, Korea and relocated to the U.S. after marrying her lifelong love, SSG Ralph Leggs, to raise a family, and to provide years of support and strength as a dedicated wife of a career military serviceman.
She was born on October 3, 1928, Seoul, Korea one of four children born to Chay Chung Duk and Lee Pung Chang, and was the beloved wife of Ralph Leggs for over 55 years. Jean will forever be remembered by her devoted husband Ralph; children Annette Maggio and her husband Joe of Manhattan, KS; Michael Leggs and his wife Lyn Throckmorton of St. Paul, MN; Mitchell Leggs and his wife Safak Paker-Leggs of Philadelphia, PA; and Daniel Leggs and his wife Sang of Boston, MA; her treasured grandchildren, Isaac Throckmorton Leggs and Eva Selin Leggs, along with many other friends and family who were blessed to know her.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, and her parents.
Jean loved classical and jazz music, opera, art, ballroom dancing, laughing, singing, cooking, being with her family, and having fun with friends. Jean touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity, and maintained her sense of humor and cheerful personality throughout her final days.
A private service for immediate family members will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010, from 10:00-11:30 a.m., followed by a public visitation for family and friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Cremation will follow the visitation, and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery.
