Joseph Lee "Joe" Beck, 72, of Junction City died August 17, 2016 at his home. Joe was born September 5, 1943 in Manhattan, the son of Delmar R. & Anna M. (Innskeep) Beck.
Joe moved, with his family, to Junction City when he was in the 7th grade. Joe was a 1961 graduate of Junction City High School, a 1963 graduate of Independence Junior College, and a 1965 graduate of Kansas State University. In 1979, he earned his Master's Degree in School Administration from Kansas State University.
Joe was drafted out of junior college by the Atlanta Braves Baseball Team. He was released after 56 days, and went on the play baseball while he was in college at Kansas State University. He remained a huge baseball fan, particularly the Kansas City Royals. He also was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking.
Joe was a long-time teacher and coach at Junction City High School. Prior to his teaching in U.S.D. 475, he taught at Bonner Springs for 8 years and 1 year at Liberty, Missouri. Joe also served in the Kansas Army National Guard. Joe was a member of the National Education Assn., the Kansas-National Education Assn., and the Junction City Education Assn.
Survivors include: a daughter, Kobi Beck, Shawnee, Ks.; 2 brothers, Oscar Beck and his wife Maria, Wylie, TX, and LeRoy Beck and his wife Norma, Cameron, MO.; and a granddaughter, Lauren Sachen, Shawnee.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Chapel, Junction City. Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery, Riley, KS. The family will greet friends on Monday, August 22, 2016, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas State University, Dept. of Education, Scholarship Fund, 6 Bluemont Hall, 1114 Mid-Campus Dr., North, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506, in Joe's memory.
