Joseph "Ray" Cowan, 94, of Junction City, passed away on October 2, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living of Junction City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Peter O'Donnell officiating, burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been designated to the St. Xavier Catholic Church, P. O. Box 399, Junction City, KS 66441.
He was born on February 11, 1921, Queens, NY to John and Sarah (Caughlin) Cowan. Ray served in the Navy as a Navigator during World War II. Following his time in the Navy he later moved to Junction City to join his brother Art in Retail businesses.
Ray enjoyed playing golf, playing pitch with his longtime friends, he was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Ray was a huge Giants fan of football and baseball. He coached the American Legion Baseball team in the late 1950's and again in the early 1970's.
He married Frances "Kingie" (Grant) Cowan on June 23, 1951 she preceded him in death January 16, 2004.
Joseph is survived by his Daughter, Sally Rivera (Frank) of Junction City, KS; his sons, Steve (Carol) Cowan of Overland Park, KS; Tim (Mimi) Cowan of Junction City, KS; Sean (Courtney) Cowan of Kansas City, KS. He is also survived by his Eight Grandchildren, Ann Marie Wellington of Springfield, MO; Jennifer Will of Springfield, MO; Michelle Thurber of Kansas City, MO; Troy Cowan of Lawrence, KS; Lindsay Jeffers of Okinawa, Japan; Joe Cowan, Cally Cowan and Katey Cowan all of Overland Park, KS and nine Great-Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Casey Cowan, August 28, 2003, seven brothers and one sister.
