John Simon Fernandez Rosa, 75, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Kerry Ninemire officiating. A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2015, at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel with a Vigil Service being conducted at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to the Knights of Columbus c/o St. Xavier Catholic Church.
John was born July 2, 1939, in Lihue Kauai, HI, the son of John Fernandez and Georgina (Silva) Rosa. He has lived in Junction City since 1972.
John was a member of the Hawaii National Guard. He entered the United States Army in 1961. John served two tours in Vietnam, one tour in Italy and one tour in Korea. He also served in Minneapolis, MN, Fort Benning, GA, West Point, NY, Fort Eustis, VA, Fort Campbell, KY and Fort Riley, KS. While serving in the United States Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross, Crew Member Wings, Senior C/M Wings and Master C/M Wings. He retired from the United States Army in September of 1981 as SFC/E-7.
In September of 1981, he was hired as a JROTC Instructor for USD #475 having taught for eighteen years. He retired July of 1999.
He was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church where he was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the DAV, Troubadors Vocal Group. He also volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels.
On February 2, 1963, he married Judith Wade in Jasper, MN.
Survivors include his wife Judy of the home. He is also survived by one son, John David Rosa and wife Lisa of Olathe, KS, one daughter, Julie (Rosa) Taylor and husband Bruce of Junction City, KS. He is survived by five grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley, John Robert, Kimberly and Matthew. He was looking forward to being a great-grandfather. He is survived by three sisters, Eleanor, Lucy and Paulette and one brother Harold, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
