Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel in Junction City for John R. Schultz, who died April 3, 2013 in Bonita Springs, Florida. The family will greet friends 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.
John was born July 18, 1923 at rural Chapman, the son of John Henry and Hulda Edith Staatz Schultz. He lived in Junction City for 30 years and Salina for 32 years, and later moved to Green Valley, AZ for 10 years, prior to moving to Fort Myers, Florida to be close to family.
John graduated from Parkerville (Kans.) High School in 1942 and later attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia.
John married Kretta K. Horner on Jan. 16, 1943 in Topeka. They were married 50 years when she died Sept. 5, 1993. He later married Geraldine G. Eberline on June 11, 2000, and they spent the next 10 years in Green Valley, AZ., until her death.
John served 3 years in the U. S. Army during WWII, spending 14 months in Europe, where he received a Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge, he worked 38 years for the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1980.
John was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Salina, and was an associate member of First Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, AZ. He was a life member of Post 1432 of the V.F.W., the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, P/p, the Union Pacific Old Timer Club #27 in Junction City, where he was the past-president of the General Committee in 1972.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Connie (Steve) Junghans, and Vicki Olson, all of Fort Myers, Fla.; 2 sisters, Arbutus York and Wiladene Janke, Junction City; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his son, John Gregory Schultz.
