John R. Blanton, Jr.

Major (Ret) John R. Blanton, Jr., 71, passed away on March 7, 2008 at Geary Community Hospital. No services will be held at this time, cremation is planned with inurnment at a later date with full military honors at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Friends of Animals, P.O. Box 580, Junction City, KS 66441. Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.

Mr. Blanton was born February 17, 1937 at Rockwood, TN to John R. and Mary E. (Bullard) Blanton. John grew up in Nashville, TN with his sister Betty Blanton Kavanov. John was active in Boy Scouts and achieved the status of Eagle Scout. John attended Tennessee Tech. and Vanderbilt University before attending USMA at West Point. John graduated from West Point June 8, 1960 and married Judy E. Woodard June 9, 1960.

John's twenty years of service to his country included the military assignments of Fort Knox, Fort Benning, and Germany, West Point, along with Vietnam and Korea, ending at Fort Riley. In John's twenty year military career he was awarded the following awards; National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal w/3 Oak Leaf Clusters, along with Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal 1st Class, Parachute Badge, Republic of Vietnam Range Badge, and a Meritorious Service Badge. He was Airborne Range qualified.

John and Judy had three children, Sylvia G. Garcia of San Antonio, TX, Mary E. Bradley of Duluth , MN and John R. Blanton, III of Hutchinson, KS , a Son-in-Law, Jonathan Bradley and Daughter-in-Law Charleen Blanton. Grandchildren include Christopher Garcia 18, Kristen Gecho 12, Ginger Gecho 10 and Jackson Bradley 2. John was active in Real Estate Sales and Appraisals in Junction City and Geary County area until he retired. He was an avid golfer and loved to travel. He was a very loved husband and father and will be so very missed by all of his family.
