LTC (Ret.) John P. Mackin, Jr., 77, of Wakefield, KS passed away on February 13, 2015 at Mercy Regional Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, February 19, 2015 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Kerry Ninemire officiating, burial with full military honors will follow at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 18, 2015 from 6p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been designated to the Geary County Fish & Game Association.
John was born April 15, 1937, Omaha, NE to John P. and Agnes M. (Kratky) Mackin. He joined the U S Army July 1, 1960, he served in Vietnam and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Bronze Star Medal w/2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon "1". He retired June 30, 1982.
Following his retirement and one short civilian security job he quickly realized that he missed his involvement with the military and went back to work as a consultant with Northrop Grumman. He once again enjoyed for years War simulations using his knowledge of artillery and strategic battle maneuvering. After fully retiring John enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating and hunting/reloading and spending time with his family.
He married the love of his life Beverly J. Hautzenroder December 31, 1960 she survives.
John is also survived by his children; Kathy (Rudy) Goetsch of Junction City, KS, Cindy (Bill) Kelly of Orlando, FL, John P. Mackin, III of North Bend, OR, Chris (Jen) Mackin of Stamford, CT; one granddaughter, Courtney Goetsch of Manhattan, KS and one grandson, Aiden Mackin of Stamford, CT, two brothers; Gary Mackin of Port Orange, FL and Lee (Alicia) Mackin of Winter Park, FL, one sister; Gail (Kevin) Tinch of Winter Park, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Susie
