Graveside services for John M. Dowling, 59, of Junction City will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with full military honors. Father Al Brungardt will officiate. Calling hours will be this afternoon from 3 p.m. until time of visitation 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street with vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Dowling passed away at his residence after a long illness on October 2, 2009.
Memorial contributions have been designated to the Friends of Animals, P.O. Box 580 and/or Hospice at Geary Community Hospital, c/o Geary Community Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Box 3015, both in Junction City, KS 66441.
Mr. Dowling was born December 23, 1949, Indianapolis, IN to John M. Dowling. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1986. Following his military service he worked with Finance and Accounting at Fort Riley before working for the U. S. Postal Service in Topeka retiring in 2005.
He married Diana Haupt on October 30, 1969, Kaiserlautern, Germany she survives of the home. Other survivors include one brother, Daniel Dowling, one sister, Donna Gwin and husband Jim, all of Indianapolis, IN, brother-in-law, Jack and his wife Holly Haupt of Frederick, MD and several nieces and nephews, Matt Gwin, Brett Gwin, Scott Gwin, Erika Haupt-LaPorta, Keith Haupt and Tracy Haupt.
He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents and two sisters.
