Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Second Missionary Baptist Church for John L. Rankin, 80, Junction City. Burial will follow the service with full military honors at Fort Riley Cemetery. Pastor Leonard Gray will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Funeral Chapel, 805 Caroline Aveune. Mr. Rankin passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Manhattan, KS. Memorial contributions may be given to the Second Missionary Baptist Church, 701 W. 10th Street, Junction City, KS 66441.
John Rankin was born December 27, 1927 in Magee, Mississippi, the son of John Q. Rankin and Inez (McLoud) Rankin. He served in the U.S. Army for 27 years before retiring in 1979. During that time, he served 4 tours in Germany and 2 tours in KMAG, Korea. Some of his awards he received, were the national Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal 8th Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, European Service Medal Expert Badge (Rifle), Army Commendation Medal and the European Service Medal. Following his retirement, he worked civil service before retiring in 1996.
John enjoyed traveling, walking, and he was a very hardworking man that always stayed busy. He really enjoyed doing all types of landscaping at his home and his rental properties. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time and talking with them. He was a very kind and generous man, and a wonderful father. He will always be remembered as someone that never gave up through his struggles and the hard times.
On March 2, 1972, John married Yong C. (Yoon) Rankin, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2004. He was also preceded by his parents and one sister Mary D. Etherly in August 1993. He is survived by one son, Johnie Rankin and his wife Crystal (Piper) Rankin and her son Dymond Piper. Also surviving are his three Brothers, Barnie and James W. Rankin both of Chicago, Illinois and Curtis Rankin of Columbia, South Carolina; and three sisters Herta C. Hill of Magee, Mississippi, Gertha Harris of Decatur, Georgia, and Gladys Coleman of Chicago, IL. John has a wonderful family that will always love him and will never forget him.
Pallbearers will be members of the Acacia Lodge, #91.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Carter Oliver, Frank Piper, Jr., Barnie Rankin, Curtis Rankin, James Rankin and Anthony Williams.
