John Joseph Gorman, 87, of Junction City, passed away at his home on July 17, 2012. He was born April 29, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of Leon and Rose Gorman. John grew up with 5 sisters, Marie, Elizabeth, Geraldine, Rosemary and Anne with all except Marie preceding him in death.
John was drafted into the US Army in 1943 as a private and served in the South Pacific Theatre of Operations as an artilleryman. John was one of the first Americans to land on Japan at the conclusion of hostilities. John entered Officer Candidate School at Ft. Riley where he met the love of his life, Joan. He became a Commissioned Officer April 29, 1949 and achieved the rank of Major before retiring August 1, 1963 from the Service.
John married Joan More of Junction City, November 26, 1949, at Ft. Hamilton, New York.
John is survived by his wife and five children: Mark Albert, in Junction City; John Lee, in Scranton, Kansas; Pierce Andrew in Lee's Summit, Missouri; Mary Lynn (Gorman) Garner, in Everett, Washington, and Patrick Noel in Shawnee Mission, Kansas; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
After his retirement from the military, John held various jobs, which included working for the rail Postal Service. John started his own business, operating Pedal N' Fun bicycle shop in Junction City, which he opened in 1973. John closed his shop and fully retired in 1983 to enjoy traveling with Joan.
John's life will be celebrated by his family in a private service.
