John Brumbaugh, the eighth of sixteen children, was born to Harry W. Brumbaugh and Julia (King) Brumbaugh on April 4, 1928 in Lincoln, Kansas. He passed away Friday, December 26, 2008 at his home. He was 80 years of age.
Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the Church of the Nazarene, 1315 West Ash, Junction City, Kansas with Pastor Jim Bond officiating and Pastor Mickey Zoretic assisting. Music will be provided by Barbara Boyanowski. Vocalist and musician will be Pastor Michael Brown. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Chris Rowe, Craig Rowe, Matthew Boyanowski, Jason Brumbaugh, and friends Darrell Rothfuss and Doyle Rushing.
John graduated from Ada Rural High School in 1946. He was united in marriage to Vanetta L. Sutton in Bennington, Kansas on June 3, 1951. There were four children born to this union; John R.; Michael; Beverly and Barbara. He was a faithful member of the Junction City Church of the Nazarene.
After John and Vanetta married they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana at the urging of his brother Harold where he began his career in sales. He was employed there as a salesman until 1955 when ill health necessitated a move with his family back to Kansas. He was able to return to work in the summer of 1956 and held various sales positions until he went to work for the Western Southern Insurance Company where he worked until his retirement. After retirement he continued to work on a part-time basis for the Dillon's Grocery Store.
He was preceded in death by his parents and Uncle Nick, who was a vital part of their family; brothers Floyd, Harold, and Adam Brumbaugh; sisters Helen Horting, Gertrude Nail, and Hazel Garst.
He is survived by his wife Vanetta of the home; sons John Raymond of Junction City, Kansas; Michael and his wife Barbara of Manhattan, Kansas; daughters Beverly Rowe and her husband Reginald of Hays, Kansas; and, Barbara Boyanowski and her husband David of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; brothers Earl Brumbaugh of Miltonvale, Kansas; Harry Brumbaugh, Silver Lake, Kansas; and Keith Brumbaugh of Ada, Kansas; sisters Doris Zaumeyer, Anaheim, California, Bea Lee of Allen, Texas; Ruth Denno of Topeka, Kansas; Eileen Powell of Fairfax, Virginia; Lila McClaflin of Tecumseh, Kansas; and Patricia Sanford of Grass Valley, California; six grandchildren Christopher Rowe, Craig Rowe, Matthew Boyanowski, Jason Brumbaugh, Amanda Morin and Jessica Schelble; five great grandchildren; Nicole Brumbaugh, Emma Howerton, Logan Morin, Anthony Schelble and Tanner Rowe.
In spite of failing health and increasing physical limitations he was faithful in attending and supporting his church. He remained active in tending his lawn, his tomatoes, enjoying his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed following the local high school sports activities, attending, or watching, rodeos on television and following college sports, the Royal and Chiefs.
A memorial has been established at the Church of the Nazarene, 1315 West Ash. The family suggests contributions to the memorial in lieu of flowers.
