Services for Jewel Herman Lawrence, 79, of Junction City, KS will be Friday, Feb. 13, 1:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 12, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Rev. George Wright will officiate. Burial will be at Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Lawrence died at his residence on February 9, 2004. Memorial contributions may be given to the Homecare and Hospice, 323 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.
Jewel was born June 14, 1924, Bowie County, TX to James Daniel and Alice (Gaulden) Lawrence. He joined the US Army in 1943, serving with the 740th Tank Battalion in WWII and the Korean War, he retired after 24 years as a CSM. His awards and medals include the Army Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Three Bronze Service Stars, EAME Ribbon, Good Conduct Award (5th Award), Expert Infantryman Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), National Defense Service Medal (1st OLC), The Bronze Star, 2 Korean Service Medals, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the American Campaign Medal.
Jewel married Sarah Bosserman, April 23, 1951 at Elizabeth City, NC. He worked with the Lonestar Army Ammunition Plant in Texarkana, TX from 1966-1972, General Electric in Stauton, VA from 1972-1976, he then went to work at More Sand Plant in Junction City from 1976 until his retirement in 1988. Jewel was a member of the Eagles Club.
He is survived by his wife: Sarah of Junction City; one son, James D. Crewe, Jr. of Evington, VA; two daughters: Anita Moske of Lawrence, KS, and Ellen Becker of Milford; two brothers: John Lawrence of New Boston, TX and Harold Lawrence of Aleda, TX; one sister: Irene Williams of De Kalb, TX; three grandchildren: Steven Bruce of Lawrence, Teresa Teufel of Lee Summit, MO, and Mica Becker of Milford; and one great-grandchild: Todd Bruce of Lawrence, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and three brothers.
Pallbearers will be Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Darryl Becker, Steven Bruce, William Teufel, Todd Bruce, Waverly O'Graves, and Adam Robbins.
