Jenelle Cowen

Graveside services for Jenelle I. Cowen, 71, Abilene, will be 2:00pm Monday, March 2, 2009 at Highland Cemetery with Rev. James Callaway officiating. Jenelle passed away February 26. 2009 at Abilene Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to H.O.P.E. Center. 305 N. Cedar, Abilene, KS 67410.

Jenelle was born July 24, 1937 the daughter of Elmer O. and Hulda J. (Peterson) Cowen. She graduated from JCHS in 1955 and from Emporia State University with a master's degree in teaching. Following graduation she taught in Germany and then returned to the States to pursue a a PHD at the University of Kansas. She also served as an education consultant in Iowa for several years and returned to Kansas in 1970. She taught at Abilene High School from 1970-1992. She retired from teaching in 1992 and then served as editor of the Reflector Chronicle before retiring again in 2002.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Jenelle is survived by her cousins, Ellis Peterson of Indian Creek, IL, Robert Peterson of Arlington Heights, IL, Karen Cowen Wieronski of Sheldon, WI, Mary Ann Stout-Schneider of Carbondale, KS and many, many friends.
