Graveside services for JC Poe, 78 of Junction City will be Wendesday, January 5, 2011 at 11:00 am at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, KS., with Reverend Jim Hagemeister officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 6-8 pm at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disable American Veterans, VA Hospital-Bldg #24 RM106G, 2200 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66622.
JC was born August 7, 1932 in Grant City, MO to Frank and Frances (Gloeckler) Poe. He joined the United States Army on March 8, 1951. He fought in the Korean War on September 1, 1951 to July 30, 1952. JC was stationed at Brize Norton Air force Base in Oxford England from December 27, 1952 to December 13, 1956 where he met his wife June and married her January 29, 1955.
JC was stationed in Korea May 2, 1963 until May 12, 1964. He had 2 tours of Vietnam. January 10, 1967 to January 8, 1968 and again in January 1970 to January 1971. He was a recipient of 2 bronze stars and 2 service metals, combat infantry badge and United Nations Service Medal, Drill Sgt Badge, Korean service medal, Combat Infantry badge, five good conduct medals and Aircraft Crewman badge. He retired MST SGT, E-8 March 31, 1973 at Fort Riley, Kansas. JC has lived in Junction City, Kansas since 1967.
JC was a horseman ferrier throughout his life and was a volunteer for the Geary County Sheriffs Possee. JC was also a Civil Service worker at Fort Riley, KS.
JC is survived by his wife, June Poe of the home. One son; Kelvin Skeats of South Bend, IN. Four daughters; Carol Peters of Junction City, Lorraine Spearman of Ft. Worth, TX, Jackie Cooper of Wichita, KS and Renee Reneau of Clarksville, TN. A sister Sylvia Boston of Excelsior Springs, MO. Twelve grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
