Graveside services for James E. Alter, 74, of Junction City will be Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 2 pm at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with Pastor Marty Schlossman officiating. A visitation will be 12 pm to 1 pm on Wednesday prior to the service. Mr. Alter passed away Saturday, October 2 at Geary Community Hospital.
James was born August 21, 1936 in England, Arkansas to Gerld & Mae (Sewell) Alter. He married Donna Elmore, July 29, 1975.
He served his country in the U.S. Army for over 20+ years, retiring in 1978 as a SGM. He was awarded the following decorations and medals, VSM, CIB, NDSM, ARCOM, RVNCG(UC), BSM W/"V" DEV, RVNCM, CIV ACT(UC)-(RVN), ARCOM (1st OLC), AND GCMLD (1ST-5TH AWDS)
He is survived by his wife Donna of the home. Four sons, James E. Alter of Mesa, AZ; Christopher G. Alter (Carolyn) of Phoenix, AZ; Robert A. Alter (Cindy) of Gresham, OR; Richard L. Alter (Darena) of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter Sherry L. Bruce and one step-son Mark Pugh both of Mesa, AZ. Eleven Grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Six brothers, William Alter of Arkansas City, Douglas Alter (Kathy) of Wichita, KS; Kirk Alter (Linda) of Wichita, KS; Les Wold (Lisa) of Wichita, KS; David Alter of Wichita, KS; Jon Alter of Miami, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents a brother Edward Alter and a sister Gracie Alter.
