Funeral services for Irene Stiffler, 86, of Junction City will be Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Pastor James H. Callaway, Jr. and Pastor G. Edmond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Milford Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 1, 2006, 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Mrs. Stiffler passed away at her home on April 27, 2006. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64105 and/or St. Jude's Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn 38105-1905 and/or First Baptist Church, 624 N. Jefferson, Junction City, KS 66441.
Mrs. Stiffler was born October 20, 1919 to William John and Ora May (Laird) Hood. She was a lifelong resident of Junction City. Her early years were spent as a member of the Salvation Army where, over nearly 70 years she served as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher and as a pianist. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and the 4W Sunday School Class. She was active in the 4H Senior Citizens Bible Study Group and frequently played the piano at the Bicentennial Manor and Nursing Homes for their Worship Services.
She retired from Civil Service in 1977, where she served as a supervisor in the Disbursing Section of the Finance and Accounting Office. Prior to working at the F&AO, she worked at the Post Commissary and at the Post Laundry. She was a member fo the National Association of the Retired Federal and Active Employees (NARFE).
She married Lawrence Stiffler on April 3, 1937. They were later divorced; however, true to her nature, she stood by and helped Lawrence when he was hospitalized and placed in a nursing home. He preceded her in death on June 18, 1988.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Fent and husband Robert of Panama City, FL and Lucille Starr of Gallaway, OH and one son, James Stiffler and wife Nancy of Salzburg, PA. She had numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters. Mabel Kane of Junction City, KS and Edna (Mickey) Hayes, of Richardson, TX and one brother, Richard Hood of Canyon Lake, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Harley, Glenn, Ralph, Frank and Arthur Hood and four sisters, Margaret Hood, Edith DuChane, Florence Richardson and Doris Nagle, grandson, Steven Starr and son-in-law, Nath Starr.
Pallbearers will be Steve Kane, Marcus Rose, David Starr, Edward Nagle, Joey Hernandez and Leslie Hood
Honorary Pallbearers will be Terry Stiffler, Danny Hartung, David C. Hernandez, Richard Hood and Gene Kane
Musicians will be Florence Whitebread and Patty Guy
