Irene (LeClere) Pendarvis, 96, of Junction City passed away at Chapman Valley Manor on February 27, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, March 5, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street, with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Riley Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, March 4, 2012 from 5p.m. to 7p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions have been designated to Geary Community Health Care Foundation, P. O. Box 3015, Junction City, Kansas 66441 and/or Friends of Animals, P.O. Box 580, Junction City, Kansas 66441.
Irene was born January 20, 1916 Rockford, Iowa the second oldest of 10 children to Fredrick L. and Anna Laura (Schleicher)LeClere.
She was a 1940 graduate of Iowa Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, IA. She married Everett H. Pendarvis in June of 1942, Gallatin, MO. They were stationed at Fort Riley, KS in 1946. Everett was killed in action during the Korean Conflict July 20, 1950.
Irene remained in Junction City, KS working at the Junction City City Hospital and Irwin Army Community Hospital, retiring as a Registered Nurse in 1977. She enjoyed playing Bridge, feeding the birds, caring for stray animals. She had a true love for College Basketball and Major League Baseball especially the Cubbies. In years past she was a member of Geary County Extension Home Unit where she won several state awards.
She is survived by her son James (Jim) Pendarvis and wife Linda of Topeka, KS, and her daughter Nancy Zara and husband Ron of Lee's Summit, MO. Four grandchildren, Rebecca Pendarvis of New York, NY, Terrah Stroda (Brandon) of Junction City, KS, Timothy Pendarvis of Arlington, VA and Cynthia Zara of Lee's Summit, MO, step-grandson, Matt McClimans (Marissa)of Topeka, KS and six great-grandchildren, Molly, Brooklyn, Camden, Braedon, Rhily and Braxton. In addition she is also survived by her brother Edward LeClere of Cedar Rapids, IA and her sister, Mary Janssen (Bert) of Vinton, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, William, Casper, Raymond, George, Kenneth, Robert and her sister, Ann Holscher.
