Irene Junghans, 96, of Junction City, passed away on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Valley View Senior Life. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church 630 S. Eisenhower in Junction City with Pastor Alan Estby officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, May 23, 2014, from 6:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Interment will follow the service at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Immanuel Lutheran Church 630 S. Eisenhower or Valley View Senior Life both in Junction City, KS. 66441.
Irene was born on March 4, 1918, in the Smokey Hill Township, KS. to George and Edith (Signer) Day.
Mrs. Junghans was an office manager and reporter for the Junction City Daily Union for many years. After her retirement, she continued to compile "To-Day's Thoughts" for the Daily Union. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Rachel Circle. She was a member of the Eagle's Auxiliary and enjoyed reading and writing.
On March 13, 1934, she married Helmer F. Junghans. He passed away April 6, 1984.
Irene is survived by her son Helmer G. Junghans and his wife LeAnne of Rockville, MD. She is also survived by her two grandsons, Kevin Junghans and his wife Andrea and Kurt Junghans and his wife Susan. She is survived by her great-grandchildren Olivia, Graham, Kori, Paige and Zoe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Mamie Koontz and her friend Elmer Ridley.
