Irene E. (Barnes) Stokes, 100, formerly of Junction City, KS passed away on July 2, 2012 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community, Lawrence, KS. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 5, 2012 with Reverend Laurie Barnes officiating at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street, Junction City, KS. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions have been designated to the Visiting Nurses Hospice, 200 Maine, Ste. C, Lawrence, KS 66044.
She was born September 27, 1911 in Frankfort, KS, the daughter of Thomas Cody and Myrtle (Blackney) Barnes. She married Charles C. Stokes, June 24, 1931.
They lived in Junction City and moved to Kansas City, KS in 1954 where Charles worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, returning to Junction City after retirement. Mrs. Stokes moved to Lawrence in 1999. Charles preceded her in death August 3, 1984.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Gertrude Land, Frankfort, KS, and Mildred Dalquest, Lawrence.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (Lucian) Giordano; 2 grandsons, Lou Giordano, and Jeff (Debbie) Giordano; 1 granddaughter, Cheri (Rene) Areaux; 2 great-grandsons, Jeffrey Giordano, and Josh Giordano; 1 great-granddaughter, Ashley Areaux, all of New Orleans, LA; 3 nephews, Ronald Dalquest and Donald Dalquest, both of Lawrence, and Conrad Dalquest, Waxahachie, TX.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Ron and Don Dalquest and their families for taking such good care of Irene through the years.
