Funeral services will be 10a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the First Baptist Church for Hughes A. Edgerton, 92, Junction City, Kansas. Pastor James Callaway will officiate. Cremation will follow the service with future inurnment at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery. A visitation will be 6 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Mr. Edgerton passed away Friday, January 16, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the First Baptist Church, 624 N. Jefferson, Junction City, KS 66441.
Hughes was born November 10, 1916 in Lake Lure, North Carolina, the son of Myrtle and James Edgerton. He served in the United States Army and retired after 20 years of honorable duty in 1962. He saw combat action in both World War II and the Korean War. During his military career, Hughes received the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Metal, and the Korean Service Medal. After his military career, he entered the Civil Service where he served at the Irwin Army Hospital until his retirement in 1990.
Hughes married Tamie Tamaya in Tokyo Japan in 1953. She preceded his death August 20, 1997.
Hughes is survived by three children, James Edgerton, Barbara Edgerton, and Debra Edgerton (and her husband Terry Baxter). He is also survived by four grandchildren, James Edgerton (Jr.), Misty Roechelle Edgerton, Noah Hunter Baxter, and Jesse Dylan Baxter. Hughes also had one great grandchild, Caitlyn Marie Edgerton.
Hughes is also survived by siblings, Devault Edgerton, Ausbon Edgerton, Ester Mary Logan, and Denilla Edgerton Bowers.
