Hobert Hicks, Sr., 96, of Junction City, died on Friday, September 7, 2012 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue with Pastor Gabriel Hughes officiating. No visitation is planned. Burial will follow at the Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions have been designated to the First Southern Baptist Church, 1220 W. 8th St., Junction City, KS 66441.
Hobert was born on April 23, 1916 in Minneapolis, NC to Cain and Nora Hicks. He attended local schools and joined the United States Army at a young age. He served overseas during World War II and also in the Korean War. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Award after suffering injuries while serving in Germany during World War II. While serving in Germany, Hobert met Ingeborg Hardt and they were married not long after in Frankfort, Germany. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2003.
During his career in the Army, Hobert moved with his family to various duty stations including Tacoma, WA, Yuma, AZ and Frankfort, Germany before retiring at Fort Riley, KS in 1963. Upon his retirement, he worked at the Custer Hill Elementary School, the Custer Hill Movie Theatre, and for many years he served as the caretaker for the Fort Riley Cemetery until his retirement at age 80.
He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Junction City for many years as well as a member of the V.F. W. and the American Legion. His greatest passion was hunting: he was an avid hunter and fisherman even into his senior years.
Hobert is survived by one daughter, Brenda and husband Kenneth Melton of Newland, NC; and two sons, Hobert, Jr. and wife Anna Hicks of Fontana, CA and Robert and Laurie Hicks of Junction City, KS. He is also survived by grandsons, Kenny Melton, Jr. of Newland, NC, Eric Hicks of San Francisco, CA, Bryan Hicks of Junction City, KS, Jason Hicks of Manhattan, KS, and Ryan Hicks of Junction City, KS. Also surviving him is his companion and caretaker, Sophie Vallon of Junction City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cain and Nora Hicks of Minneapolis, NC and by his wife, Ingeborg Hicks.
