Graveside services for Herbert M. Blanken, 88, Junction City will be 2:00pm Friday, March 6, 2009 at Highland Cemetery with Pastor Matt Christensen officiating. American Legion Post #45 will furnish military honors. Herbert passed away February 28, 2009 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Manhattan, KS. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Thursday, March 5, at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 S. Eisenhower, Junction City, KS 66441.
Herbert was born February 11, 1921 in rural Geary county to Gilbert R. and Lena (Schmedemann) Blanken. He served in the Army Air Corps from Sept. 23, 1942 to Feb. 26, 1946 as a mechanic on B-17's at the West Coast Training Command in Hobbs, New Mexico. He was shop foreman for the Geary County Highway Dept. He worked for Civil Service at Ft. Riley as a heavy equipment mechanic retiring September 1982. He was a member Immanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #45, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aires # 830 .
Herbert was married to Bonnie J. Biegert February 28, 1949, she survives at the home. Survivors include three sons, John D, Blanken and wife Linda, Henderson, NV, Glen W. Blanken, Junction City, KS and Dean R. Blanken, Stuttgardt, Germany: four grandsons David J. and Matthew S. Blanken both of Henderson, NV, Cory M. Blanken, Florence, MT and Jay R. Blanken, Eugene, OR.: two great grandsons, Trent and Rylan Blanken.
