Memorial services for Herbert L. Bunker, Jr. MD, 85, Junction City, will be 1 p.m., Friday, August 18, at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Private family burial will precede services at Highland Cemetery. No visitation is planned. Dr. Bunker passed away August 14, 2006 at Valley View Professional Care Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 113 W. 5th Street, Junction City, KS 66441 and/or Manhattan Hospice, 323 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.
Dr. Bunker was born September 29, 1920 in Harveyville, KS the son of Herbert L. and Lottie Ellen (Pope) Bunker, Sr. He graduated from Junction City High School, earned his Bachelor's at Kansas State University, and MD at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, IL. He served his internship and residences in Chicago and Detroit.
Dr. Bunker practiced medicine, both solo and with the O'Donnell firm in Junction City from 1946-1990. He then worked as an emergency room physician from 1990-1997 at Geary Community Hospital. He served 18 months as a military surgeon in Korea 1951-1953.
Herbert was an accomplished pianist, and won many awards including the Mid-West piano competition as a 15 year old. He performed at the national convention of the Woman's Federated Clubs at their invitation. He loved sports, and played golf and tennis for many years, he won numerous amateur golf titles. He was a member, elder, and sang in the choir at First Presbyterian Church, Junction City, KS.
He married Eudora J. Shaw July 10, 1946, she survives at the home.
Survivors include twin daughters, Jill Jaxx of San Pedro, CA, and Janet Bunker of Rancho Palos Verde, CA; one son, Dr. Matthew Bunker of Tuscaloosa, AL and brother, Lorenz "Larry" Bunker, Manhattan, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mildred and Shirley, and son Brian who died at birth.
