Henry Sanchez

July 15, 1924 — August 31, 2018

On Friday, August 31, 2018, Henry Sanchez, loving husband and father of two children, passed away in Junction City, KS, at age 94.

Henry was born on July 15, 1924, in Cochabamba, Bolivia, which was one of the poorest nations in South America at the time. His family was also quite poor. He was the son of a gardener and the youngest of four siblings. Henry grew up doing what many young men did in Bolivia, which was working in the tin mines.

Henry's fortunes would change after one of his sisters married an American mining engineer and emigrated to California. Henry was eventually sponsored by their family and joined them in 1947 at age 23. Unable to speak English and with only a fourth grade education, Henry soon realized that a US Army enlistment was his best option. Within a few years he learned English, attained a GED and became a US citizen.

He also decided to make the Army his career and would serve with honor during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. While stationed in France, he met a special lady who would one day become the love of his life. He married Nicole Marie-Louise Geraud in 1956, and they would eventually settle in Junction City, Kansas in 1965. After Henry retired from military service in 1968, he became a US postal employee and would eventually log hundreds of miles on foot as a mail carrier during his second career.

Henry Sanchez was not a man given to complacency either at work or at home. His tireless work ethic extended to making the house he and Nicole purchased in 1969 an attractive fixture on the corner of Spruce and Webster. He spent countless hours and weekends over the next 49 years maintaining and improving its appearance. Henry continued to live at home and maintain its upkeep long after Nicole passed away because he was certain it was what she would have wanted him to do.

Henry and Nicole would spend 50 years together until she was taken from him by cancer in 2006. He is survived by his son John Sanchez and his wife Leslie, his daughter Linda and her husband Tom Mulligan, and their two children, Andrew and Maggie.

A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 1657-1699 St. Mary's Rd. in Junction City at 10:00 am. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 with Father Kyle Berens officiating.

Memorials are suggested to the Fort Riley USO online at https://www.uso.org/donate/fortriley.
