Funeral services for CW4 (Ret) Henry L. Petty, Sr., 78, of Junction City will be at 11 a.m., Monday, September 12, 2011 at the Second Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Leonard Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Sunday, September 11, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Mr. Petty passed away on September 3rd at Salina Regional Medical Center, Salina, KS.
Mr. Petty was born October 17, 1932, Columbus, MS to William L. and Rosie M. (Martin) Petty.
He joined the U. S. Army March 3, 1953 and retired as a CW4 April 30, 1983 at Fort Riley, KS, while in the Army he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon "4", and the Meritorius Service Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster.
He was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church, VFW #8773, American Legion Post #45 and the WOPA. He enjoyed reading, fishing, football, and Baseball.
He married Jessie M. (Rhodes) June 30, 1956, Granite City, IL she survives of the home.
Other survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Ferguson (Steve) of Overland Park, KS, three sons, Henry L. Petty, Jr. (Marjorie) of Atlanta, GA, Derek Petty of Hanford, CA and Deandre Petty (Crissie) of Wichita, KS, three sisters, Rosalyn L. Quinn of Trenton, NJ, Lucille Nelson of Chicago, IL and Ann King of St. Louis, MO, one brother, Hansford Petty (Dottie) of St. Louis, MO, two granddaughters, Dashea Petty and Dominique Ferguson and one great-granddaughter, Kaelani.
He was preceded by his parents and two brothers, Earnest Petty and John Petty.
Pallbearers will be Fort Riley Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be VFW Post 8773.
