Helen Standefer Walker Kirkpatrick, born April 10, 1913 at Minneapolis, KS to John F. and Edna Standefer, passed away at age ninety-six on November 1, 2009 at Charlotte, North Carolina. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Highland Cemetery with Pastor James Callaway officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street, Junction City, KS. Memorial contributions have been designated to the First Baptist Church, 624 N. Jefferson St., Junction City, KS and Gideon's International, c/o Jerry Dye, P.O. Box 1351, Junction City, KS 66441.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Sylvia Walker of Junction City, and two daughters Janis Walker from Cornelius, North Carolina and Doris Ann Walker Nash and husband Mike from Mooresville, North Carolina. She has seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Sam C. Walker, Jr. and Lynda Walker, their daughter, and her second husband John D. Kirkpatrick. Mr. Kirkpatrick had three daughters: Mary Hibbs, Sharon Saybe, and Joyce Gray. She had one sister, Doris Standefer Paulson and a brother, Dean Standefer, who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Kirkpatrick graduated from Junction City High School in 1931 and attended Emporia State College and taught rural grade schools in Geary County until 1940. She married Sam Walker in 1936 and had four children. After her children were grown she owned and operated The Fabric Shoppe in Junction City from 1962 to 1976.
She enjoyed playing golf and bowling and was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1927 where she taught Sunday School and was a superintendent of Sunday School for seven years.
