Helen C. Hannagan, 73, of the McDowell Creek Community, Manhattan, KS. passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the Via Christi Village in Manhattan, KS.. A Funeral Mass will be conducted Saturday, October 4, 2014, at the St. Xavier's Catholic Church with Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. A visitation will be held 6-8 pm Friday with a Vigil Service held at 7 pm. Burial will follow the funeral service at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Ogden, KS. with nephew Deacon Dick Kramer officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Xavier's Catholic Church, McDowell Creek Community Center, and/or the St. Joseph's Church Restoration Project.
She was born on March 28, 1941, in Manhattan, KS. the daughter of Frank P. and Catherine A. (Otnes) Heidel. She was a life time resident of the Ashland Bottoms/ McDowell Creek area of Manhattan, KS.
Helen attended the Ashland School. She was a farmer's daughter whom helped her father on the family farm until her marriage to Willard D. Hannagan. She married Willard on January 6, 1973 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, KS. After her marriage, she became a farmer's wife and partner in their farming/ranching operation. Helen was always willing to lend a helping hand and welcome new neighbors into the community. She spent countless hours assisting her family, friends and neighbors. She was an all around "Cow Girl" and was described as a "Work Horse". She was an outdoors woman working her entire life outside. She drove grain trucks, gathered cattle on horse back, cooked meals for the guys, and attended 4-H activities with her daughters.
She was a member of the St. Xavier's Catholic Church in Junction City and the McDowell Creek Community Center.
She is survived by two daughters, Teresa C. Hannagan of the home and Janice M. Hannagan (Trey Allen) of rural McDowell Creek. Helen is also survived by six grandchildren, Jenna and Colton Weeks-Hannagan, Shandee, Lara and Tera Allen, and Tough Medina. She is survived by two brothers, Albert Heidel of Littleton, CO. Paul Heidel (Kathy) of Salina, KS and Robert Heidel (Margie) of Newton, KS. and one sister-in-law, Adeline I. Kramer of Garden Plain, KS. and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Willard on May 23, 2007, one brother, Joseph Heidel and two sisters, Alice and Maryann Heidel.
