Hazel M. Dean, 89, of Junction City, died Dec. 31, 2014 at Valley View Senior Life. Hazel was born Nov. 13, 1925 at Manchester, KS, the daughter of Ruben and Ruth (Brown) Ausherman. She graduated from Abilene High School in the Class of 1942.
After high school, Hazel worked as an engineer at a radio station in Salina, and later for the National Security Agency in Washington D.C. That job with the agency took to several countries in Europe. She and her husband owned and operated Dean Custom Upholstery in Junction City.
She was a member of the Main Post Chapel on Ft. Riley, the Our Community Spouses Club (OCSC) at Ft. Riley, the Red Hat Ladies, and the Republican Women. She had also served as Sec. and Recorder for the Bible Light International.
Hazel married James Dean on Nov. 20, 1976 at Manchester. He survives. Other survivors include: a son, Mark Thomas and his wife Sharon, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 2 daughters, Jimmie Faye Lundie and Sandra N. Dean, both of Petersburg, VA; 2 brothers, Marvin Ausherman, Los Angeles, CA, and Marion Ausherman, Las Vegas, NV; and 2 sisters, Lovona Lathrop, Salida, Colo. and Carol Van Buskirk, Partridge, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Dale Ausherman.
Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015 at the Main Post Chapel at Ft. Riley, with Chaplains Sean Phillips and Kevin Trimble presiding. Burial will be at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley. The family will greet friends Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.
